THE CHURCH IN BORZYSZKOWY

The oldest catholic parish in Gochs is undoubtedly the parish in Borzyszkowy with its history tracing back to the 14th century, with some other sources mentioning its existence in the 13th century. The original church together with a rich collection of church documentation had burned in the great fire in 1721. The temple was soon rebuilt by the provost, priest W. Klekner. The church named after Saint Martin of Tours has always been the centre of the spiritual life of Gochs. The 18th century wooden construction is a valuable example of Pomeranian baroque. The interior of the church connects the few remaining 18th century baroque elements with the contemporary ones, e.g. the rood beam with flowery and plant decoration with the figures of Holy Mary, Saint John the Evangelist and Mary Magdalene come from the late baroque period of the first half of the 18th century whereas the neighbouring organ front comes from 1982. There are numerous examples of such communion inside the church. Old and new elements match the atmosphere of the ethnic interior. In 2006, the beautiful temple was a winner of the competition organised by the General Conservator of the Monuments of the Republic of Poland called “The Monument well cared for”. This was the crowning achievement of the provost, priest Jan Flisikowski and the parishioners to protect the historical church from further decay. The winds of Pomerania, high humidity of the air and low temperatures contribute to quick warping of the wooden elements. Old wooden buildings are rarity in the coastal belt. It is worth one’s while to visit the church and to listen to the Kashubian mass. The residents of Gochs sing beautifully and, in accordance with the many centuries of the tradition, the multi-stanza hymns must be sung to the end. The church is adjacent to the oldest necropolis in Lipnica Commune – Roman Catholic cemetery whose part neighbours the church dates back to the Middle Ages.(www.parafia-borzyszkowy.strefa.pl).

THE CHURCH IN BOROWY MŁYN

The church in Borowy Młyn is one of few examples of the construction trade in the region of the first quarter of the 20th century, demonstrating the eclectic style with the tendency to simplification. The land behind the presbytery is the place where in 2006 the Way of the Cross was established in the form of fourteen crosses. The service takes place three times a year: on Good Friday, on Father’s Day (June 23) and before the parish fair in August. (http://borowymlyn.parafia.info.pl).
